Global Challenges
The world's hardest problems
Each challenge page shows how big the problem is, what already works, what blocks progress and which questions remain open. Every figure links to a primary source. These are the ones closest to our own work; 100 challenges across 10 areas are online.
- HomelessnessHousing · SDG 11Homelessness has risen in most countries that measure it, and more than 1.16 billion people live in slums or informal settlements. Approaches known to help people find and keep a home, such as Housing First and emergency rent help, reach too few.
- HungerFood · SDG 2About one in thirteen people in the world does not regularly get enough food to live a healthy, active life. Almost one in four children under five is too short for their age because of chronic undernutrition.
- Children Without Parental CareHuman Rights · SDG 16An estimated 5.4 million children worldwide were living in institutions in 2015, and decades of research link institutional care to delays in growth, cognition and attention that moving into family care can partly reverse. Studies suggest that most children in so-called orphanages have a living parent.
- Modern SlaveryHuman Rights · SDG 8Nearly one in every 150 people in the world was held in forced labor or a forced marriage in 2021, and the latest global estimates show the number rising rather than falling.
- Forced DisplacementHuman Rights · SDG 10About 1 in 70 people worldwide have been forced from their homes by conflict, violence or persecution. Most stay in poorer neighboring countries for years, and the support that helps them rebuild their lives shrank sharply in 2025.
- Clean WaterWater & Sanitation · SDG 6One in four people worldwide still cannot rely on drinking water that is on premises, available when needed and free from contamination.
